We keep the record.

The land of Stratos

High enough to watch the sky currents. Small enough that everyone knows who sold the chart.

Stratos is one island, volcanic, mostly rock, off the northeast coast where the maps go vague. Twenty thousand people live there and most of them are related. They fish, they cut turf, they argue about grazing rights, and they keep records the way other nations keep armies.

For nine hundred years Stratos has logged the sky currents that pass over the island, every shift and every season, in a hall that has never burned. Britannia's airships ride those currents. Britannia's own charts go back sixty years. The rest of the pattern is in Stratos, and Stratos has never sold it.

The island stays out of every war by being too far and too poor to bother with. That has worked for centuries. Then last spring a Britannian ship anchored in the harbor for a week, left with a sealed crate, and the keeper of the record hall was found in his boat two days later with the tide.

The council has not said what was in the crate. The younger islanders have started counting who bought a new roof this year.

The archive for Stratos is still being assembled. Its figures, faiths, and stories will be added as this chapter of the world develops.

Stratos is one thread in a larger story. The rest of the world waits beyond its borders.
