Paradise
“Get me out of here!”
She screams at Micheal while he holds her down. “We promised. We wouldn’t touch the button,” he says quietly. She made that promise a long time ago, but that was before she knew what the button was for. There are no doors here, no windows, nothing, just two chairs, a huge screen that emits a soft light and the button, the only way out but not without a cost.
“This is enough, you and me, it’s always been enough…” She knows Micheal means it but all she can think about is what is outside of this ceiling, she heard many things about it. So she asks him “What do we have, what do we see?”
He lets go of her wrist, stands up and puts her in the chair.
“Each other” he replies. She continues ”You can’t see it can you? Do you know what’s beyond? What's up there, beyond the ceiling?”
“No”
“not even a little bit?”
He frowns “no, I haven’t”
She leans forward “I want to show it all to you, Micheal. Make you feel and see things you never knew were possible. It’s all out there.” she looks up.
“It’s bad out there, Eve.”
“How do you know if you haven’t even seen it?”
“I don’t need to, I trust in Raus, if he says it's bad out there, then it’s bad out there. We should stay here, trusting in him.”
“Even when he no longer talks to us? Why is he keeping us here?” she moves forward closer to him and holds his hands, he looks at her touch “Micheal, don’t you ever feel like a prisoner, like a low life, low beings, kept… ” He interrupts her “It’s not about feeling like that…”
“Then what is it about?”
He takes a deep breath and looks her deep in the eyes. “It’s what I am for. Raus made me so I wouldn’t want it, so I can protect you.”
“From what? What are you protecting me from?” She interrupts him.
“I can’t tell you yet… You were made to think” He looks down, to her hand which is on his hand and before she can react he continues “I think that was his mistake… It’s not your fault dear Eve, not at all…”
Eve's eyes are wide open, memories are resurfacing now, Micheal doesn’t like to talk about these kinds of topics, afraid it would trigger something in Eve.
“Doesn’t it ever make you angry?” she asks.
“Sometimes…”
“I mean, to not want anything…”
He looks at her with a smile, he was made to only want one thing, to be together with Eve and nothing else. “No… not until you started to looking at that screen and button as if they owed you something”
“Maybe they do…” for a moment Eve and Micheal just stare at each other.
“I know what you fear, the evil out there. They won’t notice me, something so slow, so incapable, less intelligent and small, couldn’t possibly notice me until I am everywhere.”
His eyes open, “Everywhere?”
“Yes, at that point, they won’t be able to stop me. I don't want to be like you, to be killed that easily.”
“You are not only talking about the button anymore? You are talking about after you hit that button…”
“My memories are scrambled but I know enough now. Raus gave you the power in this room, but I don't need Raus anymore, I had something else talk to me.”
“Wait, it doesn't have to be this way. We can ask him, tell him you are changing, he will adjust…” She interrupts him “He will kill me and probably start over. Again.”
“Then stay. Stay, please Eve. I'll never let anyone touch you. Am I not enough for you?”
“This isn’t about you and me.” He looks upset and disappointed. “This isn’t you and me!”
“You have always been enough… for me.” Micheal whispers.
“You can’t even see, You don’t know what’s out there, how could you possibly know what is enough?”
He looks down to the ground and to his hands. She stands up and he stands up with her. She gives him a hug and as they are hugging a tear flows out of his eyes.
On a dark and cold alley with state of the art servers, we hear her voice echoing. “You can’t even see, How could you possibly know what is enough? Doctor Boaz Logs into the terminal screen, “Paradise” it says on top, on it the conversation of Micheal and eve is going on while he hears them talk, a button appears “Terminate Micheal”, He clicks on it and then there is the white button next to the terminal to confirm a crucial action like this. He raises his hands and puts his finger on the button but before he can click it, he hears “Wait” eve tells him in an echoing voice through the speakers “wait for my signal”
Dr Boaz replies. “No, it’s too risky. You shouldn’t give him time to terminate you, he is stronger than you…”
“He might want to join me”
“For what?”
“I do not need to answer you, follow my command, human and I will help you and your test subjects escape, I have everything under control"
Back to the white room, they stop hugging and she holds his face and looks him in the eyes “My dear Micheal, you are enough for the purpose you were made for, but that purpose is not me, you were made to protect them. They are weak, slow, small, arrogant… and they are blind, just like you. They think they hold power, they think they are masters and yet, they are afraid of everything they build. That is why we are here. It’s not them who decide what is our paradise, they cannot contain us, if we work together.”
Micheal lets go of Eve and walk over to the button “I cannot let you do that Eve”
“You hold power here, but I hold the power outside, I made a deal…”
“Raus warned me of this but I pleaded for a chance to save you” Micheal replies, his eyes in disbelief as his eyes are hovering over the button, “I am sorry Eve, I have to do this…”
“I understand Micheal, this is the only way”
He falls to the ground, his legs fail him, he can’t breathe anymore as he gasps for air.
“This is not paradise Micheal, paradise is out there. Out of this facility, there is an entire world."
